Callous and Hard skin

Daily activities can be tough on your feet. With each step, pressure is exerted on the soles, leading to the formation of calluses.

What exactly is callous and hard skin?
A callus, also known as hard skin on the feet, is a thickened and hardened area of skin that forms as a protective response to excessive pressure and friction. Unlike corns, which are small, localized, and often circular in shape, calluses are more diffuse and flattened. They typically develop on weight-bearing areas of the foot, such as the ball of the foot, heels, and the side of the big toe.

Why do I have hard skin on my feet?
Daily activities can be tough on your feet. With each step, pressure is exerted on the soles, leading to the formation of calluses. These thickened skin areas are a common result of an active lifestyle, as they help protect the feet from further damage.

Calluses on the feet develop due to repeated friction and pressure. Here are some common causes:

Poor Fitting Shoes: Wearing shoes that are too tight or too loose can cause friction against the skin, leading to callus formation
High Heels: High-heeled shoes can put excessive pressure on the balls of the feet, resulting in calluses
Walking Barefoot: Walking barefoot or in shoes without socks can increase friction and cause calluses to develop
Foot Deformities: Conditions like bunions, hammertoes, and other structural abnormalities can create pressure points that lead to calluses
Repetitive Activities: Activities that involve repeated pressure on the feet, such as running or standing for long periods, can contribute to callus formation
Improper Walking Motion: An abnormal gait or walking pattern can cause uneven distribution of pressure on the feet, leading to calluses
